Gases of Life District: the highly specialized and innovative research laboratory
19 May 2026
The Gases of Life District is the Gruppo SIAD research center dedicated to the study of gas properties and the development of scientific and industrial applications based on highly specialized mixtures.
The project brings together multidisciplinary expertise, advanced laboratories, and production capabilities to transform gas research into concrete solutions for key sectors of society and industry.
Inaugurated on September 18, 2023, in Osio Sopra, in the province of Bergamo, the district was created to enhance the role of gases in biological, scientific, and technological processes and to develop new applications in areas that directly impact quality of life, sustainability, and measurement reliability.
Gas research and development of highly specialized mixtures
The Gases of Life District integrates scientific research, technological development, and production capacity to transform the study of gas properties into concrete applications.
The center's activities include:
- Study of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of gases and their applications.
- Development of high-precision gas mixtures, even with numerous components and very low concentrations.
- Design of tailor-made solutions for scientific research, industrial analysis, and process control.
The district has over 30 active Research and Development projects and collaborates with scientific institutions and research centers. One example is the collaboration with the Mario Negri Institute in a phase II clinical study to evaluate the potential use of an argon and oxygen-based mixture in patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest.
The district combines research and advanced production. A significant part of the facility is dedicated to the automated production of specialty gas mixtures, managed by a robotic plant with a production capacity of 87,000 cylinders, which allows for the preparation of multi-component mixtures with a defined composition upon user request.
Research and application areas of the Gases of Life District
The district's activities are developed across four main research and application areas: agri-food, medical, environmental, and metrological.
Agri-food
The Gases of Life District develops solutions based on the use of gas mixtures to make crops more sustainable and reduce food waste along the supply chain.
Research activities focus on the interaction between gases and the biological processes of plants, with the aim of improving crop growth and prolonging product preservation.
Medical
This is the area of the district dealing with the study of gas mixtures for therapeutic and diagnostic applications, aiming to develop solutions capable of supporting the treatment of pathologies.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, it also explores the use of gases in the pharmaceutical field, developing reliable and innovative tools for medicine in compliance with the highest quality and safety standards.
Environmental
The environmental biology and chemistry laboratory conducts applied research on wastewater treatment and the remediation of contaminated sites.
With over 35 years of experience, it develops projects for the removal of pollutants and the optimization of environmental remediation processes, in addition to technologies for air and water monitoring.
Metrological
The metrological laboratory develops ultra-high precision gas mixtures used as references for instrument calibration.
It creates highly complex mixtures, even with up to 135 components, at extremely low concentrations and with traceability to the main international standards.
These competencies underpin the development of the metrological mixtures offered by Perfecta, designed to provide traceable calibration references and guarantee the quality of analytical data in various sectors: automotive, environmental, energy, forensic, and petrochemical.
