The regulations and standards to produce metrological gas mixtures

18 October 2024

Regulations play a key role in the production of metrological gas mixtures, creating the premises for the accuracy, reliability, and traceability of these products.

There are several regulations at the national, European and international levels which govern the production and use of metrological gas mixtures. Let's look at the main ones.

Metrological gas mixtures: regulations and standards at national, European, and international levels

In Italy, the production and certification of metrological gas mixtures are governed by regulations and standards issued by competent bodies such as the Ente Nazionale Italiano di Unificazione (UNI) and the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM).

At the European level, relevant standards are issued by the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Internationally, regulations and standards for metrological gas mixtures are mainly issued by the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The following are some of the main standards on the market today:

The following are some of the main standards on the market today:

UNI EN ISO/IEC 17025: The standard defines general requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories, providing guidelines for the accreditation of measurement laboratories.

UNI EN ISO 6143: This is a standard concerning metrological gas mixtures for the calibration of gas analyzers. It establishes procedures for the preparation, certification, and use of metrological gas mixtures.

UNI CEI EN ISO 17034: This standard defines the requirements to produce Standard Reference Materials.

UNI EN ISO 6142-1: this is the reference standard for the production of gravimetric mixtures

UNI EN ISO 6976: reference standard for calculating calorific value

These are just a few examples of existing regulations and standards. It is important to remember that standards may be subject to periodic updates and revisions; therefore, it is necessary to refer to the latest versions to ensure product compliance.

Metrological gas mixtures: why choose the Perfecta brand

SIAD is a leading supplier of gas mixtures used in various industries, such as scientific research.

SIAD's Perfecta-branded blends are fine-tuned to strict standards of safety, precision, and quality using technologically advanced preparation systems.

The SIAD Research Laboratory obtained accreditation as LAT Calibration Center No. 143 in 2001 and is also accredited as RMP Reference Materials Manufacturer No. 143.

The accreditation tables can be distinguished:

  • Products provided by Manufacturer RMP No. 143
  • Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) that the RMP Manufacturer can supply as gas mixtures with guaranteed stability;
  • The products provided by LAT Center No. 143
  • Gravimetrically calibrated and analytically verified mixtures (G-CGM) and analytically calibrated samples (A-CGM);
  • Gravimetrically calibrated and analytically verified working mixtures (W-CGM);
  • Calibration of analytical measurement equipment both at the Center and at the Client's premises.
